Nashville hot cauliflower? Yep, and more! Americano is a little gem of a restaurant located on West End Ave. in Nashville’s midtown, just off 17th. Americano specializes in a wide variety of Spanish style tapas plates, all prepared to perfection. With selections to meet the culinary desires and requests of carnavoires and vegetarians alike, Americano serves up tender meats, fresh veggies, and perfectly crafted eggs; as well as specialty libations that are 2 for 1 during brunch. I’ve tried about 75% of the current summer dinner menu, and every dish to date has been delicious! Prices at Americano are a bargin, as most of the small plates are really quite large for tapas and range from $8-14, with great discounts on happy hour dishes. A group of friends can get a wonderful range of culinary flavors by having a shared meal. Some of my favorites include the ropa vieja, tumeric glazed asparagus, chipotle glazed brussel sprouts, and the miso mussels. The staff and service are a joy, and the setting is intimate. Make a reservation to assure you get a table during peak hours. Dig in!

Holy Soul

This haunting narrative music video was selected to premiere on VICE.com last week.  It was subsequently released on Vimeo and was quickly selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick.  No surprise – it has a compelling story, sensitive direction, and beautiful film cuts. The lead character, exquisitely played by Curtiss Cook, Jr., finds himself in a stark contrast between his less than optimal home life and the lavish environment in which he works.  True to the lyrics, the protagonist of the story exists “…in a foreign land…”.  He is clearly isolated and throughout the video, we feel his longing for something more.  When his two worlds begin to collide, this boy-man’s internal battle is revealed as he fights back to regain some self respect, hope, and control of a destiny that’s lacking in his life. The video is beautifully crafted and perfectly synched to take full advantage of the song’s rhythmic sound and message: we are never so out of place that we have to surrender, and our hearts are only limited by what we allow.  I hope you enjoy this posting.  It’s definitely a three course meal – delicious music, tantalizing videography, and a story that will fill you up.  Dig in!

I can’t help but associate the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta with my wonderful father.  My parents retired to the Albuquerque area in the early 80’s, in a small town south of Albuquerque named Belen.  They lived right next door to my father’s identical twin brother, Elmer, and his wife, Aunt Vee.  They were my parent’s very best friends. When my father passed away on October 6, 1988, my siblings and I assembled quickly to celebrate my father’s life and prepare for his funeral.  I don’t remember all of the dates and events; however, I do remember that when we drove into Albuquerque the day after our arrival, I was in abject awe to witness to hundreds of beautifully colored balloons ascending into the heavens at the same time.  I distinctly remember feeling that it was a message from my father stating “All is Well with My Soul”, and it gave me great peace. 

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is the largest hot air balloon fest in the world, and is claimed to be the most photographed event in the world as well.  Albuquerque’s clear October skies, calm winds, and mild cool temperatures make it the perfect location and climate for hot air ballooning.  Over 600 balloons participate in the mass ascension, and the launch field is over 78 acres in size, roughly the equivalent of 54 football fields.
